A sizeable chunk of the $3.55 million gate from UFC 101 “Declaration” on Saturday went into middleweight champion and pound-for-pound ace Anderson Silva’s wallet.
Silva banked a pair of $60,000 post-fight bonuses -- “Fight of the Night” and “Knockout of the Night” -- after he throttled former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the opening round of their co-main event, stopping him with a short straight right hand 3:23 into the match. A crowd of 17,411 was on hand to witness Silva’s virtuoso performance, according to UFC President Dana White. In two UFC appearances at 205 pounds, Silva has dispatched Griffin and James Irvin in a combined 4:24. - [Read more] |
White: Fenway UFC; Second Oct. Show in Works; Sanchez Likely for Next Shot at Penn August 9, 2009 07:01:20Boston’s famous Fenway Park is in the UFC’s sights, said UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press conference for UFC 101 early Sunday morning in Philadelphia. The state’s senate passed a bill on July 22 to regulate the sport, a first step that could see the Octagon makes its Massachusetts debut by next summer. White is a Boston native himself.
Meanwhile, White also mentioned that the promotion has other potential deals in play and could add another event to its October calendar in addition to UFC 104, which is scheduled for Oct. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. - [Read more] |
Florian: Penn’s Intensity at Weigh-in Seemed Forced August 7, 2009 22:26:52
PHILADELPHIA -- Kenny Florian stood face-to-face with UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn after weighing in Friday for their lightweight title match, and he came away questioning the emotion displayed by his Hawaiian foe.
“His intensity seemed forced, and he seemed a little small,” said the challenger from Dover, Mass. “I am ready to go five five-minute rounds, and we will see tomorrow night if he is ready too.” - [Read more]

White on Lesnar, Frank Shamrock, Tito, TV & More August 7, 2009 21:36:06Dana White took questions for an hour Friday from UFC Fight Club members. Quick quotes and notes from Philadelphia by Greg Savage and Joe Hall:
• On Josh Barnett or Frank Shamrock returning to the UFC: “Josh Barnett’s going to be a tough one. … I made up with Tito; maybe I can make up with Frank.”
• On Pride fights airing on Spike: Best of Pride show will air in January. “We have to make a lot of money to make up for what we paid for that f--ker.”
• On Brock Lesnar’s post-fight behavior: “Brock is a different kind of guy. … I don’t tell anybody how to act unless they go over the line. … He’s a little rough around the edges.” Also said MMA is full of sportsmanship, but you can’t fit all fighters into one mold. - [Read more] |

Penn on Cutting Weight, Getting Fat & More August 6, 2009 22:47:33
PHILADELPHIA -- Now that B.J. Penn is back to fighting at 155 pounds, having returned from another jaunt at 170, much of the pre-UFC 101 talk has focused on him being in excellent shape.
It’s true; he looks fit ahead of his title defense Saturday against Kenny Florian. But he also said Thursday that cutting weight is what led to him putting on weight. Penn explained that trimming several pounds before fights had a negative impact afterward.
“As soon as the fight was (over), I’d start eating everything I wanted,” he said during the UFC 101 news conference. “Over time, I think, that kind of put more weight on me. It’s strange to say, but I think cutting weight made me fat.” - [Read more]

Fighting the Man, Not the Aura August 5, 2009 21:32:28

PHILADELPHIA -- Forrest Griffin has seen it in the faces of Anderson Silva’s previous opponents. They were beaten by the mystique, Griffin says, before the man even laid his hands on them.
“I want to fight (Silva),” Griffin said Wednesday before a workout. “I want to be in there with him. (I’m) not, ‘Oh sh-t, it’s Anderson Silva.’”
The former UFC light heavyweight champion, who meets Silva on Saturday at UFC 101, mentioned Nate Marquardt as an example of someone who underperformed against the Brazilian. Griffin shook his head and said Marquardt is much better than he showed in the July 2007 loss.
“Guys realize they’re fighting Anderson Silva,” Griffin said. “They get frustrated they can’t hit him. He’s so quick, he’s so talented. By the second round, you’re looking for a way out.” - [Read more] |
