UFC & WEC Post-Mortem: The Spider’s Sense, Torres’ Humanity, More August 10, 2009 18:48:44If you’re only as good as your last fight, Anderson Silva exited the Octagon on Saturday in far better shape than he entered.
After two performances that had fans grumbling, the UFC decided to inflame Silva’s attitude by getting Forrest Griffin to chase him. Hopefully, Griffin got hazard pay for it: after looking aimless and ineffectual in the opening minutes, Griffin walked right into a stiff jab that crumpled his ungainly frame. Power and size leaks confidence at the first sign of accuracy -- and Silva is a sniper.
What does it prove? We knew Silva was a far better muay Thai craftsman than Griffin, so it’s doubtful any eyeballs were singed tonight. But it was evidence that Silva’s recent appearances at middleweight were certainly the result of his opponents’ lax approach.
So what now? - [Read more] |

A sizeable chunk of the $3.55 million gate from UFC 101 “Declaration” on Saturday went into middleweight champion and pound-for-pound ace Anderson Silva’s wallet.
Silva banked a pair of $60,000 post-fight bonuses -- “Fight of the Night” and “Knockout of the Night” -- after he throttled former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the opening round of their co-main event, stopping him with a short straight right hand 3:23 into the match. A crowd of 17,411 was on hand to witness Silva’s virtuoso performance, according to UFC President Dana White. In two UFC appearances at 205 pounds, Silva has dispatched Griffin and James Irvin in a combined 4:24. - [Read more] |

Show in Works; Sanchez Likely for Next Shot at Penn August 9, 2009 07:01:20Boston’s famous Fenway Park is in the UFC’s sights, said UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press conference for UFC 101 early Sunday morning in Philadelphia. The state’s senate passed a bill on July 22 to regulate the sport, a first step that could see the Octagon makes its Massachusetts debut by next summer. White is a Boston native himself.
Meanwhile, White also mentioned that the promotion has other potential deals in play and could add another event to its October calendar in addition to UFC 104, which is scheduled for Oct. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. - [Read more] |
Florian: Penn’s Intensity at Weigh-in Seemed Forced August 7, 2009 22:26:52
PHILADELPHIA -- Kenny Florian stood face-to-face with UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn after weighing in Friday for their lightweight title match, and he came away questioning the emotion displayed by his Hawaiian foe.

• On Josh Barnett or Frank Shamrock returning to the UFC: “Josh Barnett’s going to be a tough one. … I made up with Tito; maybe I can make up with Frank.”
• On Pride fights airing on Spike: Best of Pride show will air in January. “We have to make a lot of money to make up for what we paid for that f--ker.”
