Seth Petruzelli released by UFC November 23, 2010 13:13:15 Light heavyweight Seth Petruzelli has been cut by the UFC after losing his second straight bout in the Octagon since returning to the promotion earlier this year. Petruzelli’s most recent defeat came by way of a first round TKO to Karlos Vemola at UFC 122 a little less than two weeks ago.

George Sotiropoulos fighting at least one more time before title shot November 21, 2010 13:02:31 With eight consecutive victories, seven of which have come in the Octagon, George Sotiropoulos likely earned the right to compete for the UFC’s lightweight title in the eyes of many after submitting Joe Lauzon in the second round of their bout at “UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida”. However, the promotion has already promised a crack at the belt to whoever emerges WEC’s 155-pound champ in the organization’s final show next month, meaning the well-rounded Australian will see in-ring action again at least one more time before an opportunity at the gold.
Fortunately, it appears Sotiropoulos will at least return to the ring in his quest for a title-shot with a distinct home-field advantage, as UFC President Dana White announced the 33-year old will be facing 17-7 Dennis Siver on February 27 at UFC 127 in Sydney during post-event press conference duties on Saturday night.
Siver has walked away with his hands raised in back-to-back fights, as well as in six of his last seven, including a recent submission win over Andre Winner about a week ago at UFC 122. He has finished fourteen of the seventeen opponents he’s beaten including two in the Octagon by way of a spinning back-kick.
In addition to Siver vs. Sotiropoulos, also scheduled for UFC 127 is a clash between welterweight stars B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch, as well as a rumored bout between Ultimate Fighter Season 3 winner Michael Bisping and veteran striker Jorge Rivera.

Jon Fitch vs. B.J. Penn targeted for UFC 127 November 21, 2010 13:01:49 Fans wondering whether B.J. Penn would return to the division where he recently reigned as champion pr remain at 170-pounds or after overrunning Matt Hughes at “UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida” got an answer quicker than they might have envisioned, similar to the finish, when UFC head-honcho Dana White announced at the post-event press conference that “The Prodigy” would be facing perennial contender Jon Fitch in Sydney at UFC 127 on February 27.
Though Penn’s twenty-one second win against Hughes was his first as a welterweight since 2004, Fitch is believed by many to be neck-and-neck with newly signed Jake Shields as the division’s top threat to the title, meaning a victory for the Hawaiian icon in Australia would certainly go a long way in terms of earning the eventual shot at the belt he covets.
The 23-3 Fitch has won five consecutive bouts since falling to Georges St. Pierre by way of unanimous decision in August 2008. He holds notable victories over Thiago Alves, Diego Sanchez, and Paulo Thiago. Prior to Saturday’s announcement he was rumored to be facing rising 170-pound star Jake Ellenberger at UFC 126.

More than $300,000 in bonuses handed out at UFC 123 November 21, 2010 13:00:49 Former double-divisional champion B.J. Penn was one of four fighters taking home an $80,000 bonus for their respective showings Saturday night at “UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida”. Penn, who finished welterweight great Matt Hughes by way of knockout less than thirty seconds into their co-headlining bout, was awarded “Knockout of the Night” and the additional cash for his dominant, tie-breaking performance.
News of the distinction was announced at the post-event press conference.
“Fight of the Night”, as well as the attached cash, went to George Sotiropoulos and Joe Lauzon for their entertaining two-round scrap ultimately seeing the Aussie emerge victorious after a second round submission. The bonus is the seventh for Lauzon in nine Octagon appearances.
Finally, undefeated light heavyweight Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis took home “Submission of the Night” for the unique manner in which he tapped opponent Tim Boetsch. Davis earned the honor, and the eighty grand, based on a one-armed, Hammerlock/Kimura – a “Philmura” if you will – causing Boestch to call it quits based on both pain and necessity in terms of protecting his health.

Gegard Mousasi’s plans for immediate future involve pair of opponents November 19, 2010 13:30:28 Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi hasn’t fought on American soil since losing his title by way of decision to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal seven months ago and, according to Mousasi himself, he will be taking a third bout in Japan before eventually returning to the States in early 2001.
The 25-year old, who won both of his DREAM-related match-ups in the interim, recently discussed his upcoming schedule with MMAJunkie and revealed not only will he be fighting on New Year’s Eve at K-1’s annual “Dynamite!!” event, but also expects to face Mike Kyle in in February at a yet-to-be-named Strikeforce event.
As far as his opponent on December 31st, Mousasi explained renowned kickboxer Jerome LeBanner as a legitimate possibility based on having been offered, and accepting, the potential match-up but also stated nothing had been confirmed yet. LeBanner has not fought in MMA since 2006 but is 3-1-1 professionally and won his final three bouts before focusing on his usual trade (where he has more than 75 wins).
Comparably, Mousasi is 4-0 as a kickboxer but 30-3-1 as a Mixed Martial Artist. His loss to Lawal is the only blemish on his record covering a span of more than four years and involving eighteen fights. The Dutch-Armenian holds notable wins over Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, Melvin Manhoef, Bellator 185-pound champ Hector Lombard, and Strikeforce’s middleweight title-holder Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
