Icon and RITC Results: Phil Baroni Wins, Drew Fickett Loses August 3, 2008 13:28:40R1-Ron Verdadero faints a jab. Phil Baroni comes out with a leg kick. Verdadero with a 1-2 counter backs up Phil. Baroni answers with an uppercut and right hook that drops Verdadero. Shimada stops it as Verdadero QUICKLY gets back up. HORRIBLE STOPPAGE. Verdadero wasn’t even hurt. Oh man.
Winner — Phil Baroni (12-10) at :51 of round 1 by TKO (strikes).
Richard Villa upset Drew Fickett with a second-round TKO. Villa followed a game plan that started earlier that day at the weigh-ins.
Fickett came in over weight and had to run off two pounds, which may have taken its toll on him. Villa and his camp figured they would take full advantage of that by letting Fickett come out strong and then tire.

Snapshot of the Day: Anthony Johnson, Post-Eye Surgery August 3, 2008 01:34:32
From ProMMA, who caught up with Anthony Johnson today at the IMMAE (International Mixed Martial Arts Expo) in Long Beach, CA. Johnson required Lasik surgery and stitches in his right eye after his retina became detached during his controversial TKO loss to Kevin Burns at July 19s "UFC: Silva vs. Irvin" event.
While at IMMAE, "Rumble" was also a guest on Sherdogs Savage Dog Show and spoke candidly on a number of interesting topics, including the surgery and his feelings towards Burns and referee Steve Mazzagatti, working on his kicks with Cung Le, whether Cung could take on Anderson Silva, plus Johnsons rumored beef stemming from a sparring session with Josh Barnett. The interview begins around 1:39:00 on the podcast. - [Read more] |
Rampage Jackson Victim Has Miscarriage August 2, 2008 21:35:53
From Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, Californias Daily Pilot:
A Huntington Beach woman who was more than 16 weeks pregnant and who police said was injured in a hit-and-run crash with mixed martial artist Quinton "Rampage" Jackson on the 55 Freeway two weeks ago has had a miscarriage, her fiance said Friday.
The article goes on to explain what happened to the woman during the accident.
With all the confusion and mystery surrounding the situation, this development doesnt make Quintons position any easier. A potential civil suit, if not a criminal trial, could destroy Jackson financially. - [Read more] |
Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold-Gavin Likely for EliteXCs Next CBS Show August 2, 2008 19:49:18 NBC Sports (kind of) confirms the rumor thats been swirling since earlier this week:
Popular EliteXC female fighter Gina Carano will likely take on Kelly Kobold-Gavin when she returns to the cage on CBSs Oct. 4 production, a source close to one of the fighters told NBCSports.com.
The fight has not yet been officially signed but is expected to be announced soon, according to the source.
Cant say this comes as a huge surprise. Even if Carano vs. Cris "Cyborg" Santos (5-0) is the match-up everyone wants to see following the Brazilians vicious thumping of Shayna Baszler last weekend, the tough veteran Kobold-Gavin comes carrying a substantial 16-2-1 record and -- more importantly for EliteXCs purposes -- hasnt fought since August 2007. Kobold-Gavins last two bouts (both for BodogFight, R.I.P.) were the only two losses of her career thus far, having been submitted and decisioned by Tara LaRosa and Julie Kedzie, respectively, in a span of just over one month. Carano defeated Kedzie six months prior at EliteXCs inaugural event.
Two things for certain: Kelly had better be working her wrestling hard up there in Minnesota between now and October 4th, and Gina should probably just start cutting weight now.
After the jump, video of Carano (aka "Crush") absolutely mauling a 52-year old woman on American Gladiators last month.

Rumor: Fedor off Affliction II August 2, 2008 01:23:16There are rumors going around right now that Fedor is off Affliction II, and the main event will be Josh Barnett vs. Andrei Arlovski, with the winner (maybe) fighting Fedor. Sam Caplan posted the story here:
A reliable source speaking condition of anonymity revealed...that Emelianenko has been dealing with a lingering hand injury that will make it virtually impossible for him to be ready in time for Afflictions October show...
This will be a big blow to the momentum of the second show, because Fedors streak was really their ace in the hole. This puts Tito Ortiz in an even better bargaining position too, if true.
Also, while the hand injury probably really is the reason he is off, I cant help but wonder if it has more to do with his unaffordable price tag. - [Read more] |
The Washington Post Tells Brian Stanns Story August 1, 2008 23:25:16Weve all read Brian Stanns story a trillion times, but The Washington Post doing a story on it is big news. Heres the opening paragraph, which will make you either roll your eyes or smile depending on how many times youve read it:
Before each fight, Brian Stann walks into the cage knowing that whatever happens, nothing will compare to the hell he survived in Iraq.
The point though is that Brian Stann is going to be a gigantic superstar in this sport if he is brought up in the right way (and if he doesnt die in Iraq). The appeal of his story is so obvious, a war hero and a knockout artist combines two things that will always sell in America. Personally, I think Brian Stann is the real reason they want to move the heavier weight classes over to the UFC. Even in the UFC, he will get Roger Huerta-esque treatment early with easy fighters to finish, but they know that the money potential of a match like Brian Stann vs. Chuck Liddell once Stanns story is more widely-known is absolutely through the roof.
I suspect Brian Stann is going to be a huge name in this sport in the next few years. Itll start once the 205 guys move over to the UFC. From there, itll be a question of whether they can get him into a great camp full-time, and how much he can improve in a short period of time. - [Read more] |
The UFC Edited Roger Huerta to Promote His Fight August 1, 2008 17:53:20I just came across this interview with Roger Huerta at MMA Madness that everyone should check out. He addresses a lot of things, but this really caught my attention:
They put these videos on the UFC where I said the fight was going to be a "cakewalk". They f#@%ing pissed me off because what I was saying is that, COMPARED TO MY LIFE, this fight is a cakewalk. It was in no way a disrespect to Kenny, its just with all the s@#t Ive been through as a kid, fighting Kenny is a cakewalk. Anyway…when it comes down to it, it really is just a fight…its just a fight.
This is a pretty shady tactic, because it made him look like a prick, and turned a lot of people against him. - [Read more] |
